Getting a Handle on the New RDA Toolkit

On April 30, there will be a major update to the RDA Toolkit BETA site that will include a stabilized version of the English test as well as added and improved functionality to the BETA site. A detailed announcement about this release is coming. However, join us on May 10 for a free 90-minute webinar that will review the impact of the April 30 update. You'll learn about the new entities and concepts that have emerged from the IFLA Library Reference Model and the restructuring of the RDA standard. You'll also be provided with a demo of the new BETA site's functionality and features.

Statement on Instruction Numbering

The publishers of RDA Toolkit and the RDA Steering Committee have been closely monitoring feedback on the new RDA Toolkit beta site. Based on comments provided via the online form, public forums, and various discussion lists, it has become clear that the absence of instruction numbers is challenging for some users, especially those involved in cataloging training and education. This issue does not come as a surprise to those of us involved in the 3R Project. It is one we have been discussing and debating for the last two years.

Where to Find Examples in the Beta Toolkit

We have heard from some users that examples have been few and far between. Because the RDA text is still a work in progress on the beta site, it has been difficult to write examples. When the 3R Project is complete we expect there to be many more examples in the new Toolkit as compared to the original one. Also the new Toolkit will feature new types of examples, including examples for recording methods, relationship examples, and examples in context. The attached list will guide users to instructions with a variety of examples.
