Appointment of Translations Team Liaison Officer Elect

Appointment of Translations Team Liaison Officer Elect

Szabolcs Dancs and Marcell Ormandy

The RSC is very pleased to announce the appointment of Marcell Ottó Ormándy as Translations Team Liaison Officer Elect. Marcell will succeed Szabolcs Dancs as Translations Team Liaison Officer and Chair of the Translations Working Group on 1 January 2027, following a period of preparation which will include observing the RSC November Meeting and the monthly Executive Group Meetings. He will also receive training from Szabolcs and from RDA publisher James Hennelly as well as working with RSC Secretary Anne Welsh and Technical Team Liaison Officer Chris Holden to gain a deeper understanding of the RDA publishing processes and workflows.

Marcell has been a member of the Translations Working Group since 2025, and brings with him broader experience in web and traditional publishing. As well as being Standards Librarian at National Széchényi Library, Marcell is a copyeditor and typesetter for the publications of the Hungarian Library Institute and a copyeditor and editor of the of the Central European Library and Information Science Review (CELISR), a science journal published jointly by the Hungarian Library Institute and the National Technical Information Centre and Library at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics.

The appointment committee (RSC Chair Renate Behrens, Director of ALA Digital Reference James Hennelly and RSC Secretary Anne Welsh) were impressed by Marcell's skills, not only in these technical areas, but in languages. Szabolcs Dancs leaves behind him a legacy of working with colleagues in Central and Eastern Europe and we are keen to see this work continue. As well as fluency in Hungarian, English and Slovak, Marcell's studies in Latin, sytlistics and etymology give him a framework for work in many European languages, and prior to his current role, he completed retrospective conversion of a collection of 19th-20th century Central European, Russian and other Cyrillic materials.

RSC Chair Elect Robert L. Maxwell, who contributed to the selection process, is also happy to see Marcell appointed, continuing European expertise, and is looking forward to working with Marcell when he becomes Chair in January 2027. The rest of the RSC join with Renate and Robert in welcoming Marcell to the RSC.

It is worth noting that although Szabolcs will complete the maximum two terms as Translations Team Liaison Officer at the end of December 2026, his role as Backup Europe Representative will continue, and he will also stay on as a valued member of the Translations Working Group. In accepting the position, Marcell expressed his thanks to Szabolcs for his ongoing support throughout the transition.
