Serial Harmonization

Serial Harmonization

Members of the RSC participated in a meeting on "Impact of the IFLA Library Reference Model on ISBD, RDA and other bibliographic standards" at Wrocław University Library on 25 August 2017, following the IFLA World Library and Information Congress. The meeting was co-hosted by the RSC, NUKAT (the union catalogue of Polish academic and research libraries), the ISBD Review Group, and the EURIG/RDA Europe region, and it was chaired by Gordon Dunsire, the RSC Chair. The RSC thanks Ex Libris, a ProQuest company, for its sponsorship of the meeting.

The meeting and its outcomes continue the on-going effort to harmonize the treatment of serials in RDA, ISBD, and the ISSN Manual, following the discussion hosted by the RSC at its meeting in Frankfurt in November 2016.

Over 40 participants, including local Polish colleagues, discussed topics including transcription and manifestation statements, harmonization of metadata for serials and issues with serial aggregates, and the treatment of rare materials.
The meeting started with an excellent welcome address by the Director of Biblioteki Uniwersyteckiej we Wrocławiu (Wroclaw University Library), Mrs Grażyna Piotrowicz. Short presentations from representatives of relevant standards bodies were followed by intense and fruitful discussions on the modelling of serials, manifestations, and items in the Library Reference Model.

Some of the short presentations are available at: http://www.bu.uni.wroc.pl/en/ifla-presentations

A slightly amended version of Gordon Dunsire's presentation on RDA and the LRM is available at: http://www.gordondunsire.com/pubs/pres/LRMRDAIFLA17.pptx

The RSC Aggregates Working Group is preparing a briefing paper for the RSC based on the outcomes of the harmonization meeting in the context of the RDA Toolkit Restructure and Redesign (3R) Project and the May 2017 meeting of the RSC in Chicago.

A presentation and discussion on the RDA treatment of serials will be a major topic at the RSC outreach meeting "Preparing for the new RDA Toolkit", to be held 09.00 to 13.00 on Monday 23 October 2017 at the Biblioteca Nacional de España in Madrid.
