Proposal on Jurisdictions, Governments, and Courts in RDA

Proposal on Jurisdictions, Governments, and Courts in RDA

The RDA Steering Committee (RSC) is delighted to have received the first proposal from its Place/Jurisdiction Working Group.

One of four working groups established by Kathy Glennan when she was RSC Chair, the group's purpose is "to support the improvement of the RDA standard by examining the concepts of place and jurisdiction (corporate body) and their associated definitions and instructions in RDA. The primary deliverable is a discussion paper ora proposal (or both if needed) with recommendations for disentangling the semantics and clarifying the instructions" (Terms of reference, set out in RSC/Chair/2022/3).

The proposal, RSC/PlacesWG/2023/1 - Jurisdictions, Governments, and Courts in RDA, "examines the treatment of jurisdiction as ‘a place that is governed by a law, regulation, constitution, court rule, or other legislation enacted by a corporate body that is a government’ in RDA and proposes changes RDA to harmonize this concept with elements related to corporate bodies that are governments and courts" (Abstract, RSC/PlacesWG/2023/1).

It will be discussed by RSC members at their upcoming meeting in May, during the public session on Thursday 18 May. If you would like to be added to the list of online observers, please send an email with subject line RSC OBSERVERS' LIST to Anne Welsh, RSC Secretary, RSCSecretary@rdatoolkit.org.

The meeting will be held at ALA Offices in Chicago, and there is limited availability for those who would like attend in-person. If you are interested in attending in person, please be aware that you will need to provide proof of COVID vaccination prior to entry into ALA’s offices.
