New Spanish Translation and Distribution Agreement

ALA Publishing, acting on behalf of the copyright holders of RDA: Description and Access has signed an agreement with the Association of Ibero-American States for the Development of the National Libraries of Ibero-America (ABINIA) for a Spanish language translation of the official RDA Toolkit.

RDA: Resource Description and Access is a flexible standard for recording bibliographic metadata and serves as a basis for the international exchange of bibliographic metadata. The RDA copyright is held jointly by the American Library Association (ALA), the Canadian Federation of Library Associations (CFLA), and the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP, United Kingdom), through their imprint Facet Publishing.

ABINIA is an association of national libraries from Latin America, Spanish-speaking nations of the Caribbean region, and the Iberian Peninsula. It was established in 1989 and includes 18 member libraries. Its members are focused on strengthening the impact of national libraries in the Ibero-American community on cultural and educational progress through international collaboration.

In addition, ALA Publishing has signed an agreement with Información Científica Internacional (ICI Group) to become the new distributor of RDA Toolkit and official RDA products throughout Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) Region and Spain.

Starting July 2, 2024, all new subscription requests and renewals in the LAC region and Spain must be made through ICI Group:

Community Resources is a new area of RDA Toolkit that allows institutions and organizations to share critical cataloging documents for specific communities. In this webinar James Hennelly, director of RDA Toolkit, will demo Community Resources--how it is organized, who will contribute, and what to expect from the documents gathered there. Some time will also be given to recent changes to RDA Toolkit, including the merged drupal sites and the multilingual display. There will also be time for a Q&A session. The webinar is free to all and will be recorded.

RDA Drupal Sites Have Merged

Two weeks ago rdatoolkit.org, the drupal site that provides news and information about RDA Toolkit, and rda-rsc.org, a drupal site containing updates on the activities of the RDA Steering Committee (RSC), the RDA Board, and the regional committees, were moved to a new server, upgraded to drupal 10, and merged into a single website. Hopefully you have already noticed many of the smaller changes which came with this significant upgrade. This post will explain why the sites were upgraded and merged, and what improvements were made.

But, first two important notes--

Your links to the RSC documents and other pages are not broken, at least I hope not. A redirect was set up which should cover all the links, but in reality there's always some that get broken. You can contact me (jhennelly@ala.org) with any link issues you encounter.
RDA Toolkit (access.rdatoollkit.org) is not impacted by these changes. There has been no interruption to Toolkit service.

Why were the sites upgraded?

Both sites were running very old versions of drupal that are no longer supported and were increasingly vulnerable to hacking and spamming.

Why were the sites merged?

We believe a single site will make it easier to share information about the work and activities of the Toolkit, the RSC, the RDA Board, and the regional committees with a single website. For example, a post about an upcoming webinar in Europe on manifestation statements can be highlighted on the Oceania site, making the event more accessible to those in other parts of the world with interest in that subject.

What has been improved?

A lot has been improved on the backend that excites those of us who regularly post on this site, but for visitors, they will be able to enjoy what I hope will be a livelier and more informative experience. The navigation has been improved to give the RSC and the regional areas a prominent position. These areas now have the ability to function as a sort of microsite, each with it's own landing page (with slideshow and highlights) and left column navigation. Visitors should also notice the the blue bar at the top that includes the search feature and "Access RDA Toolkit" button. This bar is present no matter where you navigate in the site.

In 2022, Elisa Sze, Education and Orientation Officer, published a “Report on Approaches to Teaching RDA in the LIS Classroom”. This handout includes key points from that report and identifies concepts and issues that educators may wish to consider prior to teaching with RDA Toolkit. It also offers ideas for how to integrate RDA into a variety of courses. The selection of topics covered in the handout was informed by Elisa’s conversations with educators and trainers undertaken in 2022-2023, as well as feedback collected during her February 2023 webinar.

March 2024 RDA Toolkit Release

A new release was posted to RDA Toolkit last week. The March 2024 release includes light changes to RDA content, the introduction of the new Community Resources space, and the additon of the Orientation version of the Guidance menu in French and Finnish languages.

Changes to the RDA standard include correction of typos, broken or missing links, etc. Most notable is the removal of some condition options related tothe transcription guidance to the Legacy Community Resources pages. There were also updates to the French and Finnish language translations and all policy statements sets.

The Community Resources space has been rebuilt so that it can host contributions from a broad range of RDA Toolkit subscribers. Contributions to the CR space can be made through using the RDA content management system or the HTML editor available on the Toolkit. Learn more about the CR space here. Contributors to the CR space must first be approved by the RDA Steering Committee. If you are interested in being a contributor, please complete this online form.

RDA Board at ALA Annual Conference

The RDA Board, an international group of library professionals, is responsible for setting the strategic direction for the development of RDA and ensuring good governance of the project. They also have a role to play in raising the profile of RDA in their region. The RDA Board will hold it's annual meeting in San Diego on June 26 and 27, and they will stay for a preconference event at the ALA Annual Conference (June 27- July 2).

RDA Around the World is free preconference event that will be held Friday, June 27 at 9:00am. It will feature international members of the RDA Board discussing the impact of RDA on their cataloging and metadata practices and how their parts of the world are addressing the obstacles and challenges of official RDA. Join us for some fresh insight into how the rest of the world is thinking about and reacting to this international standard.

While this event is free, it is a ticketed event. Space is limited and registration is required.

Do you have any questions about the training for the official RDA? What are the most challenging aspects of RDA trainings with the RDA Toolkit? Compared with the original RDA, how can one trainer adapt themselves and train others to use the official RDA Toolkit? If you have those questions, please come to the 2024 NARDAC Spring Update Forum.

The North American RDA Committee (NARDAC) invites six experienced RDA trainers to join a panel discussion at the Forum, including Adam Baron (UC Berkeley), Thomas Brenndorfer (Guelph Public Library), Bob Maxwell (Brigham Young University), Melanie Polutta (Library of Congress), Louise Spiteri (Dalhousie University), and Elisa Sze (University of Toronto). The panel members will share their experiences of teaching the official RDA, including takeaways, lessons, and concerns/questions that they have during their RDA teaching work. They will also answer the questions from the audience.

A new release was posted to RDA Toolkit this week. The January 2024 release includes a couple of improvements to the RDA Toolkit, a couple of element name changes, and the introduction of a policy statements from Library and Archives Canada/Bibliothèque et Archives Canada in both English and French (LAC PS and BAC ÉP respectively).

One new enhancement to the Toolkit is a new display of locally shared notes in user's profile collection. Once users are logged into their profiles, they can click on "Bookmarks and Notes" in the top menu bar, and they will now find a separate section for locally shared notes. Reminder: Locally shared notes are shared only with profiles associated with the same institutional account.

The other new feature is that all policy statement sets are now available to view no matter which RDA language you select. For example, users can now read the French language BAC ÉP while viewing the English language RDA text, and vice versa. Please read "Setting Up Multilingual Display in RDA Toolkit" to activate this new feature.

Revisions to RDA terminology and practice include two changes to element names that arose from a proposal (RSC/PlacesWG/2023/2) by the Place/Jurisdiction Working Group that were accepted by the RDA Steering Committee at their October meeting.

The release updates the French and Norwegian translations, bringing them up to date with the September 2023 release of the Toolkit. The Finnish translation is current with the English RDA text. Updates to policy statements from the British Library, Library of Congress - Program for Cooperative Cataloging, National Library of Finland and National Library of New Zealand were updated as well. The new LAC PS/BAC ÉP are limited to Manifestation elements in this release.
